Icons don't come much more recognizable than this 1980 Porsche 911 SC. However, even as arguably the world's most popular sports car, there is always room for improvement, so a few well-chosen upgrades have transformed this one into something both unique and spectacular to drive.

Silver always works on the 911's sleek shape, and you can spend a lot of time studying this SC and still not see all the changes. Both the front and rear bumpers were swapped out for lightweight units like those found on RUF's Yellow Bird supercar, one of the first street cars to break the 200 MPH barrier, and they not only shave 100 pounds off the curb weight but improve air flow to the oil cooler for improved reliability. Euro-style headlights give it a much sleeker look too, and a very trick whale tail spoiler out back gives it a familiar look with a twist. It's all coated in lovely silver paint that sparkles in the sun and shows off Porsche's incredible build quality with even gaps throughout. Combined with European taillights with amber turn signals and a lowered ride height, this car stands out without resorting to excess, a common malady suffered by many 911s.

The early 911's interior was pure form following function, with supportive bucket seats, an instrument panel that puts the tach in the middle, and a fat steering wheel that telegraphs the front tires' activities directly to your fingertips. The beautiful seats show only very minor wear and the dash shows zero evidence of baking in the hot sun despite this car's southern roots. And for a car that's fast approaching 35 years old, it's surprising that everything still works-including the clock-but then again, this is a Porsche where reliability comes standard. The seat belts were re-webbed but use the original hardware so it still looks totally authentic, and even with a sunroof, the headliner fits superbly. The front-mounted trunk is neatly upholstered in original materials, and features a lightweight strut tower brace that sharpens handling and steering response.

The 3.0-liter flat-six really needs no introduction, being the mainstay of the 911's personality for fifty years. Naturally aspirated Porsches tend to be virtually bulletproof, and enthusiasts prefer their razor-sharp throttle response and outrageous air-cooled howl. The best cars are those that are exercised regularly and maintained according to factory specs, and this car certainly qualifies, offering a full motor rebuild a few years ago that included new cylinder jugs, pistons, and all-new cylinder studs for reliability. Carrera chain tensioners eliminate the one known issue with this particular engine, and it also has the pop-off valve upgrade, which is great for peace of mind. The exhaust was replaced with a beautiful stainless setup with SSI heat exchangers and a Bursch-style outlet. A new Sachs clutch and starter were installed in July 2011, and the tie rods were upgraded to Turbo units for durability and precision. New Bilstein shocks at all four corners work with a slightly lowered ride height to deliver impressive handling and a reduced tendency to snap back at inexperienced drivers. Traditional black Fuchs alloys look great and wear 205/50/15 front and 225/50/15 rear Kumho radials.

Designed to enhance an already superior machine, this SC offers the enthusiast all that is great about the 911 distilled to a more pure form. Call today!
